The EKO-PUNKT® 'dual system' is a private sector business that organizes the collection and sorting of sales packaging. EKO-PUNKT® is part of the REMONDIS Group and is active in Poland, Hungary, Great Britain, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. REMONDIS has many years' experience of setting up and operating take-back systems and transports huge material streams. Each year, we collect, process and market 25 million tonnes of recyclables. Across Europe, we organize the collection of around 100,000 tonnes of packaging materials a year. The material is processed and all recyclables are recovered and fed back into the economic cycle.
International producers and distributors, in particular, are interested in finding cross-border solutions for the European market. EKO-PUNKT® has access to an international network and is continuously working on extending its services throughout Europe. The company's services range from setting up national logistics systems, to collecting the materials, to processing and marketing secondary raw materials, to documenting the material streams. Our services are targeted at all companies placing sales packaging onto the German market. We always have a solution – even if it only involves very small volumes of material, for example for people running online shops.
REMONDIS is actively committed to conserving natural resources. By closing more and more material life cycles, we help to ensure that there will be sufficient reserves of raw materials for future generations. One of our core businesses is water resources management. Only 2.5 percent of the Earth's water supplies is fresh water. Water is extremely valuable. REMONDIS' sustainable water management activities are targeted at ensuring that, despite the growing demand for water, there will be sufficient quantities of clean water for many years to come.
We also support measures to prevent climate change across the world. For this reason, we focus on innovative forms of energy as a replacement for fossil fuels. At our company, electricity is generated from biomass – CO2 neutral and, therefore, climate-friendly. At our power plant in Lünen alone, we feed 160,000 kilowatt hours of electricity into the national grid every year. We supply cement works and other industrial companies operating large-scale furnaces with substitute fuels and the majority of our fleet vehicles are run on the biodiesel we produce ourselves. The result is a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 70m kg/a. At the same time, we reduce fine particle pollution and conserve natural resources.
REMONDIS is one of the largest privately run water and environmental service companies. It employs around 19,100 people in 25 countries across the world. In 2008 it had a turnover of 5.6 billion euros and invested approx. 250 million euros.
