Recycling rates for Europe.
The European Packaging Directive, which came into force in December 1994, aims to harmonize the laws in the member states concerning the prevention and recycling of packaging materials.
The EU directive determines the framework conditions for promoting waste prevention and recycling. It is left to each member state to determine themselves to what extent they wish to implement the directive. The rates of recycling, however, are binding. European take-back systems must be set up if these rates are to be achieved.
